BMI formula-Calculating BMI: The body mass index is a calculation which works out how much body fat that you, it can give your doctor or physician some idea as to whether you are overweight or underweight. BMI is an estimation process for weight and sizing which dates back as far as the mid-19th century and was originally called quetelet index which changed to BMI around July 1972.
Needless to say, the BMI is not the most reliable source of weight evaluation. It does not actually measure the fat percentage of your body, just helps to tell the doctor whether your weight is healthy for your height.
If your weight is too heavy in comparison to your height then this can be a sign that you are overweight, but again this isn’t totally fool proof. The BMI is important for professionals to judge your weight when you go to them. If you are under 18.5 then you are classed as being underweight, but if you are over 25-35 BMI then you are classed as overweight.
BMI indexes to have a tendency to be different for men, women and children. Men are usually slightly of higher BMI than women and their muscle mass can also play a part. Children’s body mass index however is normally managed through the medium of centile charts from the age of two up until 5 years of age.
It is suggested that you should keep a check on your BMI; there are many ways to do this. If you have weighing scales at home then measure yourself and weigh yourself then use a BMI calculator to work out your BMI. You can do it yourself or do it on the internet by using an online calculator.
Another way is to go to your local pharmacist where they have charts which will tell you whether you are overweight or not, or go to your doctor for a checkup and have your BMI checked.
